The gemstone at the centre of this opal earrings is an Australian boulder opal from Opal Minded’s own opal mines in Jundah-Opalville in Queensland. Its distinctive quality is its “play of colour,” a phenomenon which manifests in opal’s colours shifting and changing as the gem moves. Pipe boulder opal is an organic-matter-replacement opal that forms in iron-ore bearing rocks. Its distinctive quality is the “play of colour” present in mostly translucent gem material, a phenomenon which manifests in opal’s colours shifting and changing as the gem moves. This particular opal is transparent and attached naturally to the host rock in which it was found. Outstanding in size and quality, its play of colour is suspended in the otherwise transparent opal matter, which makes for a fascinating water-like effect.
